How Fantastic is a Wood Burning Pizza Oven

Also known as the Garden Pizza Oven…

The wood burning pizza oven has been around for thousands of years but has never gone out of fashion, even though they are relatively scarce.

Scarce enough in fact that if a neighbour was to either buy or build one, people would be so jealous.

The neighbours in question would suddenly find that you have an Italian Pizza Oven in your backyard…

They will be looking at you as a pizza oven rental…

Even if they like it or not…

There they are.

Lining up outside your door with the dough in hand hoping you will invite them in.

Your decision of course…

You could always slam the door in their face, or not.

All this because they have a new outdoor wood fired pizza oven.

The garden pizza oven can generate real passion in its owner.

A magnificent example of this is Colin MacFadyen, co-owner of Popina’s Pizzeria in Auckland, New Zealand.

His story, and that of Popina’s, is based purely on his absolute passion for wood fired oven cooking.

His dream involved expert Chefs from around the world and his is a story to inspire people who are new to the outdoor pizza oven.

Popina’s is easy to find on the internet.

Why Is Wood Fired Pizza Better In A Wood Burning Pizza Oven?

Since the pizza is in your oven. See?

Did you notice?

‘YOUR PIZZA OVEN’.

Anyway, cooks very quickly in a wood fired oven, it has the effect of imparting that delightful contrast that a finished pie has, so crispy.

Because the bottom of the crust will cook very quickly in a wood burning pizza oven, giving it that pleasing charred flavour on the edges of your pizza, making it taste just a little smoky, in such a good way.

After all… Who wants a soggy pizza.

Right!

Your Outdoor Wood Burning Pizza Oven

In general terms, any new wood fired oven needs to be ‘cured’.

This is absolutely essential if you build your own, but also valuable for the longevity of commercially bought ovens too.

As far as commercially available wood fired ovens are concerned, they should always be accompanied by a set of instructions that will advise any necessary ‘curing’.

Home built wood fired pizza ovens have to be cured over several days.

Sorry to say…

But think of the cooking afterwards.

PIZZA!

Under no circumstances allow that natural impatience of yours to make you light a big hot fire in your oven until curing is complete.

OK!

Curing instructions are readily available on the internet.

You may not be aware of this, but outdoor wood fired ovens can easily reach temperatures in excess of 500 degrees centigrade, around 1000 degrees Fahrenheit.

You can imagine the damage these temperatures can cause in an oven that has moisture pockets that have not been ‘cured out’.

Since we are not all ‘dedicated followers of fashion’, there must be a very good reason for us to want to own an outdoor wood fired pizza oven.

In fact, to call these wood fired ovens ‘pizza’ ovens is a complete misnomer.

They certainly do make fantastic pizzas, and some people use them only for that purpose.

However, this is a bit short-sighted in my opinion.

Some of the best bread in the world comes out of these ovens.

You can barbecue and grill, smoke fish and meat, and, believe it or not, these ovens make fantastic slow cookers too.

They hold a huge amount of heat that can be retained for hours, and as such are well-placed to cook a casserole or stews etc.

I think that you can gauge the popularity of a cooking item when nationally known chefs have them at their own home.

Jamie O and James M are famous examples here in the UK.

If you are prepared to get to know your oven you will find yourself stunning your family and friends with the quality and range of food that you can prepare.

You can make things even easier for yourself if you make sure that your oven has a working thermometer!

See, just how fantastic the wood burning pizza oven is…
